چکیده

[1] Two He/SF6 dual‐gas tracer injections were conducted during the Southern Ocean Gas Exchange Experiment (SO GasEx) to determine gas transfer velocities. During the experiment, wind speeds of up to 16.4 m s were encountered. A total of 360 He and 598 SF6 samples were collected at 40 conductivity‐temperature‐depth (CTD) rosette casts and two pumped stations. The gas transfer velocity k was calculated from the decrease in the observed He/SF6 ratio using three different approaches. Discrete points of wind speed and corresponding k were obtained from the change in He/SF6 ratio over three time intervals. The results were also evaluated using an analytical model and a 1‐D numerical model. The results from the three approaches agreed within the error of the estimates of about ±13%–15% for Patch 1 and ±4% for Patch 2. Moreover, He/SF6 dual‐tracer results from SO GasEx are similar to those from other areas in both the coastal and open ocean and are in agreement with existing parameterizations between wind speed and gas exchange. This suggests that wind forcing is the major driver of gas exchange for slightly soluble gases in the ocean and that other known impacts are either intrinsically related to wind or have a small effect (<20% on average) on time scales of the order of days to weeks. The functionality of the wind speed dependence (quadratic or cubic) cannot be unequivocally determined from SO GasEx results.

Measurements of air-sea gas exchange at high wind speeds in the Southern Ocean: Implications for global parameterizations

[1] The SOLAS Air-Sea Gas Exchange (SAGE) Experiment was conducted in the western Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean. During SAGE, gas transfer velocities were determined using the He/SF6 dual gas tracer technique, and results were obtained at higher wind speeds (16.0 m s"1) than in previous open ocean dual tracer experiments. The results clearly reveal a quadratic relationship between wind s...

Reply to comment by X. Zhang on ‘‘Measurements of air-sea gas exchange at high wind speeds in the Southern Ocean: Implications for global parameterizations’’

[1] We thank Zhang [2007] for recognizing the significance and importance of our work. In his comment, he questioned whether we have correctly assessed the wind speed/gas transfer velocity relationship derived from the NZ SOLAS Air-Sea Gas Exchange (SAGE) experiment [Ho et al., 2006]. Specifically, he assumes that we only analyzed the gas transfer velocity data from SAGE using a quadratic wind ...

Gas transfer velocities measured at low wind speed over a lake

The relationship between gas transfer velocity and wind speed was evaluated at low wind speeds by quantifying the rate of evasion of the deliberate tracer, SF6, from a small oligotrophic lake. Several possible relationships between gas transfer velocity and low wind speed were evaluated by using 1-min-averaged wind speeds as a measure of the instantaneous wind speed values. Gas transfer velocit...

From Discussion Session : Gas Exchange at High Wind Speeds : Recent Observations and Constraints

The discussion started with 4 brief presentations which provided a theoretical background for the ensuing discussion. The presentations are posted and thus not much detail on the presentations is included here. (1) Anna Rutgersson presented the basic air-side theory of gas exchange. She discussed how young waves are found under high wind speeds. In laboratory studies, the drag coefficient level...

Influence of rain on air-sea gas exchange: Lessons from a model ocean

[1] Rain has been shown to significantly enhance the rate of air-water gas exchange in fresh water environments, and the mechanism behind this enhancement has been studied in laboratory experiments. In the ocean, the effects of rain are complicated by the potential influence of density stratification at the water surface. Since it is difficult to perform controlled rain-induced gas exchange exp...
